Impressions of Greece: Historic Photography

Talk by Candace Richards
The Nicholson Collection at the Chau Chak Wing Museum maintains an incredibly rare and significant archive of glass plate negatives that capture the landscapes, archaeological sites and village life of Greece between 1890 and 1910, taken by former curator William J. Woodhouse. When traversing the mountain passes of Aetolia, visiting the monasteries of Meteora, surveying the ancient remains of the Peloponnese or enjoying Easter festivities on the Pnyx at Athens, Woodhouse always had his camera at the ready. This lecture will explore Woodhouse’s legacy at the Nicholson Museum and reflect on the ongoing flickr project to document the collection.
