Mini Greek Film Festival - Macedonian Wedding (Short Film before) Anna's Matchmaking

MACEDONIAN WEDDING by Takis Kanellopoulos | 1960 | 24´ |
Short film screening before the feature film.

In a West Macedonian village, about to set out for her wedding, a bride asks: “Oh mother, why did you have to marry me off so young?” She spreads out her dowry in the yard, “handmade by her and her mother”, as if her own value depends on it. Around them, the entire village is dancing and celebrating.

Kanellopoulos elevates ethnographic cinema into a lyrical essay about roots, traditions and, ultimately, Greece itself.

Screened in a partially restored new digital copy (DCP), with English subtitles and Greek subtitles for the deaf or hard-of-hearing (SDH).

ANNA’S MATCHMAKING
by Pantelis Voulgaris | 1972 | 82’ |

“One of the most sensitive, human and impressive Greek films ever made” Variety

A sensitive portrayal of a young maid, working for a fading bourgeois Athenian family. Brought to Athens from a poor village, the modest, uncomplaining, intensely religious Anna works to dutifully support her mother and siblings back home. Anna’s employers decide that she is of a marrying age and set about to find a suitable husband. Anna is introduced to Kosmas and is given permission for an evening out. For the first time Anna sees her life in a different light. However, when she returns home she discovers that the family has changed its mind.

The film will be screened in a newly restored digital copy (DCP), created for the purposes of the event “Motherland, I See you”, with English subtitles and Greek subtitles for the Deaf or Hard-of-Hearing (SDH).
