Leonard Cohen on Hydra- CANCELLED

Lecture by Professor Vrasidas Karalis

A presentation of Leonard Cohen’s stay on Hydra in the 1960s and 70s and the impact of the island’s atmosphere on his work as a lyricist, poet and musician. Cohen’s presence on Hydra has been celebrated to this day because of his famous song “So Long, Marianne”, which has become the musical emblem of an era but also an expression of the nostalgic recreation of a lost innocence. The lecture presents some of his songs and poems referring to the island and also examines the discovery of the Mediterranean as a landscape of imagination by artists, writers and celebrities in the 1960s.
