A Talk in Greek by Dr Panayota Nazou
During the Ottoman occupation and above all in the Greek War of Independence, Greek mothers, wives, and daughters, some famous and some unknown, fought heroically and sacrificed themselves on the altar of Freedom. Unfortunately, in the past, most official histories of the Greek nation, as well as the Greek education system, have either granted them only a brief mention,
or have ignored them completely.
Today, after 200 years, in these celebrations of Greek Independence, we consider it our urgent duty to speak about these women, to honour them and to express our unbounded admiration and gratitude.
