Capodistria, by Nikos Kazantzakis: a talk and readings

Nikos Kazantzakis composed this play just after Greece’s liberation from Nazi occupation, on the threshold of the Greek Civil War. The assassination of the first head of state, Capodistria, in 1831 ended the dream of democracy. The play explores the psychological, political and cultural tensions that dominated the emerging social structure of the new country.

Professor Vrasidas Karalis and his fellow thespians present a brief lecture and a dramatized reading of excerpts. They aim to trace a diachronic pattern in the political life of Greece after 1821 and to explore through Kazantzakis’ work the underlying forces that established modern Greece.
