In the 1950s and 60s, a new wave of Greeks and Greek Cypriots began arriving in Sydney, joining established Greek families in neighbourhoods like Redfern, Paddington and Marrickville. Drawing on recent findings of the Greek Australian project, Nick Doumanis and George Kouvaros from the University of New South Wales will discuss what it was like for young newcomers and the kind of social world or ‘paroikia’ they tried to create. The event will also discuss how people in the Greek community can approach their own family histories and how to preserve and interpret oral, written and material evidence (e.g. photographs).
